"Serious Business"

Most of the time, games are played for fun. Although since games like DnD don't really have a reset button or check points, losing a character can be a big blow, especially one that you put a lot of thought in.

So when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and sometimes that means putting the jokes and absurd plans to the side and really putting effort into it. Tell a story about a time where your group or someone else's group that had to get serious about a situation or enemy.

Normally, my necromancer just chills on his zombie quetzlcoatl and pings fire bolts at the enemies.

Then came the mammoth. "Oh, it's a big fluffy elephant, how hard can this be?" Turns out those tusks are pretty good at goring things for a fair bit of damage (including about 3/4 of the fighter's hit points."

*cue: hold my beer*

Quetzlcoatl does a flyby attack and I jump off and use Vampiric Touch (hp drain) while ramming it with a flaming sphere.

Dumbo went down pretty quick after that.

"Sniper, No Sniping"

I once played a Gunslinger in a Pathfinder campaign. Knowing that guns are very powerful, my musket was essentially a ranged greataxe that ignored most armor bonuses, I decided to go for a pseudo-sniper build and only make one attack per round. This also saved my character from having to constantly spend gold restocking his supply of alchemical cartridges.

Everything went smoothly until we infiltrated the Underdark, which was swarming with metal-clad creatures wielding katanas. Not long after the combat had started, our melee fighters were in bad shape, the Cleric had her hands full just keeping them alive, and the Orc woman I had taken prisoner was huddling in a corner hoping to not be seen.

"No use saving them if we die."

I pull out my alchemical cartridges, move in closer, and start making three attacks per round. I drop one enemy, then another, and before we knew it I had pretty much single-handedly turned the entire fight around.

We ran into a similar situation not long afterwards. The party was having major issues trying to fight a Succubus, then I showed up and broke out my cold iron bullets.

The party had to face the grandfather (he aged very slowly so he was'nt that old phisically) of one the PC. One of the player was about to go at it the same laid back way as usual- that is: see the boss, attack him. even if this mean facing it one on one before the rest of the party can join in the fight.-but the other told him that no, this time they wait for the party to regroup and come up with a actual plan. He was the one who made a passing mention of that Grandfather in his backstory, so he had a idea that they where up for a though fight.

Yes... no... maybe... Depends on what he has available to him.

You see, in the Pathfinder game I'm playing in, I'm the Cleric in a party consisting of a Fighter who focuses on sundering, a Scout/Sniper Rogue, and a Fighter with a Monk/Sorceror dip aiming for Dragon Disciple. In this party, I don't need to deal any damage at all really except for the occasional Flame Strike, Slay Living, or the odd Inflict/Heal depending on what we're up against. Why? Because in a single round, the fighters and the rogue can dish out roughly 100 points of damage minimum without even trying. I forget how many attacks exactly they get in a full round attack, but each of them have a minimum damage per attack of 20.

Now this leaves an interesting question: what the hell do I do in all of this carnage if not damage? Quite simple really. I have a happy stick (cure light wand), I have my spells, I have a handful of cure serious potions, and I have 7 5d6 channels with selective channeling a day. Beyond this, I'm the party's only caster if you don't count the disciple from the Order of Fisting People as caster with his shield and stone shield spells as a caster. I'm in charge of utility buffs and debuffs (which I'm still learning), healing, restoring ability damage (need to get that wand), divining things to frustrate the shit out of the GM, and noting when something magical is afoot. All while being Chaotic neutral and serving one of the elder gods of creation.

So do I usually hold back against bosses? Yes. Why? Because Someone may need healing over the course of this 3 round combat and, for god's sake, what's behind that door?

This, a million times this. It could be a box of puppies, it could be an old one. It comes down to the GM ad some GM's are more terrifying than others, and then there's the quiet ones who start off with a tea party between the mage and the uber npc and then a god of rats claws its way out of the rogue's skull scarring everyone for life and it's a TPK because someone blew all their spells on the goblins because it was 5 till end of session.

In Mutants and Masterminds you can use Hero Points to perform special feats, like making one of your powers stronger, saving yourself from death, staying conscious even after taking too much damage, giving a feat to your powers, etc. You get Hero Points by performing heroic deeds and you can carry a limited number of them. Are you getting beaten by that villain? Don't be afraid to use your Hero Points.

In fact, we played a M&M campaing based on One Piece once. The system fit like a glove for the world of One Piece. I was the medic (no devil fruit), our captain had the bomb-bomb fruit and our navigator had a zoan fruit which I can't remember right now.

It can happen. For almost two years worth of realtime, my character was happy buffing the party and never made an attack. Then we came up against a group of enemies which had been researching our group and had tailored their ambush to counter all the techniques they'd seen us use. (Which is what we'd been doing against them this whole time.)

Which is when my character said, "Then let's show them something they've never seen before," and took out ten giant demons in one blow.

My alchemist learned Dispelling Bombs in Pathfinder a level and a half ago. It can make me litterally rain up to 5 dispels in a round. I still haven't used them. The reasons are synple:

By this point, we've been a spanner in the plans of the resurrection of an ancient (evil) wizard and the rebuilt of the empire he once had for 5 modules in a row. Thinking he isn't spying on us through various divinatory means would be beyond naive. And he is now watching us explicitely since we entered his own tower.

Am I really to let him prepare for our arrival knowing just how well I can counter his magic?

Quite a few powers have very limited use, so it is common to hold back your best shots until you feel you need them. A lot of veteran gamers even hold back at that point, believing that there's something even worse coming after the big guy you're currently beating up

Some resources have a limited number of uses per day. Saving your best for the boss would be equivalent to saving your rocket launcer for when the enemy tank shows up, instead of wasting it on a lone trooper.

"That Guy With the Face"

I was a bit of a power gamer back in 3.0/3.5 mostly due to a DM who believed that it was him vs. the players and I responded in kind. Later under other DM's and in Pathfinder I had trouble building normal characters so instead I would build the usual overpowered god character but hold my punches. Sure my fisty cuffs fighter 4 armed kasatha can make 4 attacks per round before level 5, and can regularly hit as hard as a two weapon fighter. But instead I would make two attacks per round like a monk and I would generally hold off from boosting my damage, unless the fight got deadly.

Another example would be my Bards, between word of creation, song of the heart and several other cheesy but effective feats and items my bards could hand out ridiculous bonuses to the party or themselves and be as deadly as the main fighter. Depending on the threat level of a fight I would decide what buffs to release, and how much I would increase the party or my abilities by.
