Oooh, I almost forget this is where Nami hi-tails it out of there! It wouldn't be One Piece without a horribly depressing backstory for the main characters! Thanks for the comic!

Wait... so not only the characters have horribly depressing backstories, even the players have? I hope it's not as depressing as Nami's story....

This is just going from sad to one piece sad

The question is, what kind of sad backstory could potentially fit with Arlong's arc? Unless we're going with DM's history and we switch to another series... Hmm... Maybe the Old Power Players did something abusive to Nat's character, and she took it to heart?

Maybe, maybe not. It could be as simple as her moving away and no longer being able to game with her old friends, which would be sad because even if they were way too hack and slashy for her tastes, they were still probably her friends- or maybe she had to leave OTHER friends too.

Or they may have kicked her out for being too into the roleplay. Or maybe her characters just couldn't keep up. Or maybe the GM of that group died, or any possible number of reasons.

My personal favourite wild guess would be that she stopped being able to play with them because one day they decided to larp the hack and slash instead of just rolling dice, but then it turned out that one of them was allergic to plastic and foam, so the swords they used ended up putting him in the hospital, where he fell in love with his nurse and they got married, but then she joned the gaming group with a bunch of her nurse friends, and they made the game so awkward and clunky with their inexperience that the hack and slash couldn't continue, that the gaming group broke up, and Nat is sad because she's worried that if they push the issue here THIS gaming group might also break up, and she doesn't want that because she likes the others so much, but she really insists on having roleplay stuff- and then GM and DM give in by making the whole Arlong Park thing more RP heavy by bringing out fishmen that the group shouldn't be remotely able to fight, trying to force them to find another way- but then the guys decide, in the end, to fight them, and in a specific way, in order to prove to Nat that even though the game has lots of hack and slash, that doesn't mean it can't have lots of Roleplay as well.

Story time is about depressing backstories! I'll start!

Raxon was engaged, had made a name for himself, and had built the great house, a very large mansion to house the family he had assembled, outcasts from around the world. He was in a hurry, and neglected proper safety procedures. He stepped through an experimental portal generator, and the bloody thing totally burned out.

Well, in the void in which he found himself, there was a single window through which he could watch his fiance, due to the link between their bonded rings. She was the one to find the burnt out portal. She summoned other wizards, but his notes were incomplete.

He was lost. All he could do was watch as his fiance, friends, and family mourned him. He watched her return to the great house to find it has been pillaged and burned to the ground. He watched her fall in love with another man, and marry him. He watched the woman he loved bear another man's children. He watched them grow, as she grew old.

Finally, she passed away peacefully in her sleep, and when she died, the window died with her. The last thing he saw in the window was her death. Then he was alone. All alone in his prison without walls for 800 years. Anyone else?

Oh. You thinkin I shoulda waited for her inevitably tragic backstory to be revealed?

Wait wait wait. Is this foreshadowing?
I mean, you know that time when Nami leaves for Arlong? she going to actually leave the groop for being to much about fighting?
And then the rest of the group wants her to stay and promises more rolplaying, so we get all those sad backstories of the Arlong-arc?

The Arlong Park Arc is going to be a Player vs Player match up between gaming groups, isn't it? Ooooooh, it's gonna be awesome.

He was called Bayonet J (Changeling: The Lost)

He was taken on his wedding day, the limo drove right past the church and straight into a wall, through the Hedge into Faerie.

In Faerie he was placed in the arena of his captor.

In the arena you'd be pitted versus each other in gruesome battles, most often both participants would be forcefully shapeshifted before the fights began.

Sometimes the master would even make it fair, but mostly it was things like Salmon vs Dragon.

If you were the Salmon and you couldn't win that fight you didn't last long.

Another way to not last long was falling in love with an inmate.

Just in general building tight affections with anyone typically meant a brutal death match.

So Bayonet J stopped having friends or building relationships. Stopped allowing himself to care about the people he'd eventually be forced to kill for the True Fae's enjoyment.

Then one day, the master sent everyone away. Everyone. Bayonet J escaped along with his one friend, who had been so boring a pacifist that he'd been turned into a tree (for dissenters to hang from) and as such Bayonet J had never been in danger of having to kill him in the arena.

Together they escaped. After 15 years of torment.

Bayonet J found his honeymoon was barely over, and that his wife was happily married to... him. His Fetch. The double made out of scraps and illusions that had taken his place so no one would miss him.

He had nothing, no more drive towards studying medicine, no more drive to find love or have friends. Nothing more except watching over the woman who had been his fiancé...

And smoking almost continously to dull the taste and smell of blood left constantly in his mouth.

"my theory on DM"

and you know what, i'm sure DM have some sort of backstory, too.

like, she used to be a fair roleplayer, but ended up in a table of hard powergaming munchkin, making life difficult for her character. she then learned to munchkin so hard that she outmunchkined them and started creating "abomination" of characters. the other player, not taking well when they're the one getting killed in pvp or crazy shit like that expeled her from the group.
That would give a reason why she came to luke when she saw him expeled from his previous group.
She now is way too used to play this way and scared to come back at playing normally. Will have to relearn to play normally in a way that make the game fun for the other player.
(would concord pretty well with Robin backstory, too)

I second that DT could find a good way to align such a backstory to that of Robin.

Now i might think she can still play normally, just forgot that it could be fun. And as you said, maybe fear to do so. in a "if i don't step on them, they will stomp on me." way.

Y'know, saying "she used to be a flurby roleplayer until a bunch of other players taught her how to powergame" is pretty demeaning to DM's character. A gal is just as capable of being a munchkin powergamer as any guy, and implying that all gals start out as flurbs until they're traumatized or "taught better" is kinda sexist?

"quite a good group, actually"

honestly, this group is'nt that bad.
Rika is a nice girl.
Luke minmax, but you can tell he still care to have fun when playing and pay attention to the others players. Cory is tottaly powergaming, but he is'nt being a jerk with the other players.
And de GM is a pretty nice guy and deciced that he would make more plot when he saw that just hack'n slash would'nt work as well with the other as it does for Luke and Cory.
Even DM who have been a jerk to the point of nearly driving Phil to quit was somewhat manageable.

Luke would probably be awesome to play with.
Now Corry's attitude might seem a bit rude, especialy for someone who don't know him. especially if she had some bad experience in the past.
