"Suffocation"

How feasible is it to suffocate someone in 3.5? I know in 5e it's basically impossible since it takes at least 5 rounds, 10+ rounds if the target has a Constitution of +0 or more.

It's pretty unmanageable. It's definitely at least a minute, more with higher con, so yeah, 10+ rounds. I guess if you had really really good ac and grapple mods you could try to manage it, but damn. The only time it really comes up is drowning situations.

Most people forget that while the base rules for suffocation are pretty forgiving, in the more granular systems like 3.5 and Pathfinder there's usually other rules that call out that the max number of rounds you can hold your breath will often be cut short by the fact that any amount of strenuous activity (such as most Standard Actions) will eat up those rounds.

Translating to the comic right here, the escape artist attempts and attempt to force the giant off would be cutting into that time. 10 rounds sounds like a lot, and in a lot of cases it might be. But it also depends on what else is going on, like "is it combat" or "did the cave just collapse on you"... and this is probably closer to the latter in how likely it is for ten rounds to be "short"

Yeah 10+ rounds of combat is a lot, but a few minutes to dig someone out of rubble is short. Suffocation generally won't happen in combat without special things to shorten that time. There's a couple things that skip the normal suffocation rules, mostly spells.

In 3.5 it's 2 times constitution score rounds, taking strenuous actions counts as double so back to single- but that still means random commoners have 10 rounds/1 minute. Unless you have a grapple check that someone literally can't get out of (which is entirely possible in 3.5) it won't be feasible.
And even then it would only work in a 1v1 scenario because any allies would have a whole lot of actions to help before you even realistically stood a chance of dying. If something had enough grapple to keep someone down while facing attacks from an entire party for a full minute or two, it's not something that should be fought.
