Try to find your way on unnavigable seas without the one device that can lead your the right way? Yeah, sounds good.

I never understood this chapter. Yes, they have a log pose that sets in a year.

But it seems like even without the log pose you could ummmm head to the nearest island?

They have a map? Sextant? They can chart courses? Navigate by the stars? I think The World Government designed those things so that people who trusted them (mainly pirates) would find themselves out of luck. The Marine havw bases filled with real maps. In fact, they have Eternal Poses and factories that can make them. Decent navigators should distrust such things (in fact, the entire New World Arc, they for the most part do until Whole Cake; they ignore all three to go to Vegapunk and from there start using Vivre Cards).

For that matter, staying inside the ship except to forage (fruits to stave off scurvy) and fish is an option.

Let's say hypothetically Luffy and the others tried to go to Arabasta without the Log Pose...

What should Nami throw? Navigation? And if so... Should she throw it many times? Could they need a high score for a long time?

Considering how the Grand Line works? It would not be unreasonable to have Navigation checks separated by minutes. If they anchor themselves, the weather can change wildly around them at a moment's notice, so they have to continually keep an eye on that. And this is assuming they don't accidentally end up in the Calm Belt, which is effectively a "dead end" for the setting. Following the path of the Log Pose likely takes them through a relatively stable route in the chaotic weather and seas.

So, while technically possible, the risks far outweigh any possible reward, especially at the level they're at now.
