Does Nat think they would have arrived at another island if she could pick the direction? That's cute. How many island per session does she think Gordon can plan for?

Every GM railroad. There's just the difference between bad ones who negate characters action and decide in their place how to solve encounters, and good ones like Gordon who put players at the wheel, but they're still very much on track most of the time. A lot of the time, if the party steers away from an event, the GM just places it further down the road, or maybe reskins it. "It was supposed to be a regular shark, but since you teleported to the desert at the last minute, have a sand shark-- err, I mean lizard."

You leave the ship? Have an encounter! You stay on the ship? Have an encounter too! Want to befriend dinosaurs? Ok, let's see... Want to run from the friendly giant? Sure, here's what he does.

I think players believe they don't like the railroad because they only notice the rails when it's the unfun version happening.

It do really be like that. Setting up encounters takes time and players somehow just assume the encounters have all been set up regardless of what they decide. That's why good GMs have those improv skills
