I mean he's not wrong. If there is a character that needs to be escorted somewhere then you'll likely encounter any combination of; the most direct path there is blocked so you need to take some long winding alternative route that may or may not be super dangerous, the character you're meant to protect gets themself in trouble, or it's a trap. Never are things as simple as get person from point A to point B.

"Or the the escort guy is an arsehole..."

We did a bodyguard mission in Shadowrun once.

First we had to kidnap the guy.
Then we had to keep him safe for 3 days.
Then we had to escort him to a place.

He was the most annoying arsehole ever!
(Our GM had the time of his life...)
In the end I had to knock out our street samurai twize to save the mission because he rolled shit and wanted to kill the guy...

We only had one attack from NPCs and they were a lot less dangerous then the sam!

And don't forget that the one you need to protect will be walking as slow as s/he can so a 10 min walk turn into two hours

That remind me of Aventure. When they meet a dying NPC who tell them some plot related stuff.
The GM clearly intended the guy to die after warning them that the intendant guild was scheming something, but for Once, the party both decided to act heroically and succeded at acting heroically. Meaning they saved the guy, but he was still in a critical state so they had to carry him around. They managed to keep him alive for a ridiculousely long time.
