I like the convenience vs efficiency angle with this. It's convenient to have the ship pull in the anchor. It's efficient to have Zoro do it.

Anyone got a story for this? I've had a few in game instances, but nothing big enough to build a story time around.

There's crossbows vs bows. Crossbows are convenient, but bows are efficient with training.

Well, I got something that might count.

If you may recall, I once told the story of how my group rolls to care, and how my friend jumped onto some boats to attack enemies before rolling up a new character.

So, let me set the scene.

Groups on the top of a castle wall, we got city guards bringing out the big canons for this fight, we got bands of enemies coming in from land, river, and more land, and things generally look like shit.

Specially since their were some caged trolls on the ships that were planned to be released.

But, I took on look at all that, looked at the Cannons being prepped, powerful engines of war that were honestly pretty bullshit and overpowered, but slow to use.

I then stared at the DM, and uttered 6 words.

"You know I got Fireball, right?"

Many plans burned that day.

See, my response would have been 5 words; “Yes, and so do they.” People keep forgetting counterspelling is a thing.

We weren't facing the spellcaster unit though, that group was attacking a different part of the city.

Also, it was 3.5 so counterspell is a bit harder to use.

Counterspelling is easy. Identify the spell, cast the spell, no more spell.

It's pretty easy if you *know* there will be fireballs and nothing else, and that's pretty easy to assume for most large scale battles. Anything lesser than fireball requires the caster to be out in front, or doesn't affect much. A lightning bolt, for example, puts the caster in longbow range, or at most the second range increment- and will probably only hit a smaller number of people unless they actually have combat lines 24 men deep. Fireball is the most common long range area of effect magic and can cause significant damage to any formation. Even if there are more powerful spells, most of them are much more limited in range.
The only comparable spell of similar level is ice storm, and that's both higher level *and* less damage. It would only be worth preparing for the sake of avoiding it being counterspelled.
If you're high enough level for delayed blast fireball, however, it's less likely that there are many other caster of a similar level... and they might not be at the same part of the battlefield at the same time.
Of course there might be some non-core spells that might fit the same niche, but there's no reason your enemies couldn't learn about such useful battlefield spells themselves. Unless you're just higher level, which can be good enough.

I did only say a bit harder to use.

Besides that, I don't think my GM thought I was going to use my spells since I was standing right next to the big 'Fuck you' canons I mentioned before.

Well, why not? Ships of wood and such... Fireball would be a great idea.
