"But what's the catch?"

Tell a story about the players getting a reward for something, where they thought the reward was too good to be true, and thus a trap.

Well, not quite the same, but my Gm has us roll when we take on Caraven missions, I rolled a Nat 20.

Now, you'd think that'd mean we get a good encounter, a nice traveling band or something.

Not a fucking Red Dragon.

Something in that vein: in a short-lived dystopian, cyberpunk-esque campaign, I included one genuinely fair and decent employer who had the players run errands that were often challenging, but rarely life-threatening. In the few cases there was actual danger involved, he was always upfront about it. He paid handsomely considering the setting, and he always, always gave good feedback when the job had been done well.

Needless to say, he was the employer my players distrusted the most. In the middle of a sea of opportunistic exploiters, a decent guy with the resources to run an honest business stuck out like a sore thumb. There was an actual reason he acted the way he did, and I half expected my players to start looking into his background and motivations to find out what he was hiding. Paranoia is a powerful thing.

When you throw a blade in the air next to your arm you shouldn't say the word catch for a good thirty minutes after.
