Whenever a DM wants their players to do something, it's best to have an NPC order them the opposite.
Have we done that as a story time, yet? Times DMs (or players) used in-game reverse psychology.
just to joke with the GM, we once did exactly what a NPC said when told to leave, when obviousely we where suposed to stay to help.
It turned out to be helpful, since the bad guy came to town, we weren't there, so he did'nt knew our face and ignored that we where allies of theses peoples. Thanks to this, we had the element of surprise when we later attacked him. Also, fighting outside of the city probably limited the property damage.

We was presented a choice of paths to take. DM wanted us to take one.
the party of five pcs decided to split (each group had a 13th level arcane caster, so teleportation/communication wasn't MUCH an issue).
Finally met up again last night and now are a happy group of 13th level pcs again.

They don't even consider "not getting in a bar fight" a option. XD
