Woo, someone needs to turn on the cold showers. Things are getting a bit racy in here. ;D

Sometimes those racial/template abilities can make or break a character. Looks like Luffy's on the breaking end this time.

Racist or Specist?

Luffy question is good... Is Arlong "Racist" or "Specist"?

"Dumbest comment I have ever made"

The term Racist is a bit of a misnomer, by it's very definition race is a synonym for species. Relatively recent events in our culture have completely warped the word into what we know it as today. If we were to change out for a more accurate word for what humans call racism, breedism would be more accurate, yet still falls short.
Welcome to English. Don't forget you're here forever.

Since the biological races as race is commonly defined aren't actual things the most appropriate term would be "arbitrary-divisionist"

"Semantics"

At least in German the term 'Rasse' means breed and nothing else. 'Spezies' or 'Art' is a category where interbreeding doesn't produce fertile (if any) offspring.
So either Arlong is a regular racist or Zorro can't have kids.

"Tell a Story: Fantasy Racism"

Fantasy games is all about genetics. Dwarves are all about the dwarves. The elves are all about the elves, and so on. They're built with bigotry hardwired in.

Share a story about when racism entered into your game. This can be as social commentary, accidental blooper, or important character traits. We wanna hear it folks.

Reminds me of a very real criticism I have of many attempts at elves. As long as people aren't expecting like Santa's Elves or the like, I find there are two ways to go with Elves:

1) The noble but still flawed creatures seen in Tolkien

2) Hypocritical elitists

Most seem to try for the former but end up with the latter. S'why I built mine straight away as the latter, but sadly never got around to introducing them in a campaign.

Tried something similar with my blind elderly dwarf sorcerer. Only got to play him for one or two sessions, so it never came into effect, but part of his character was/is that he's really, really anti-orc. Old-school dwarf, just was raised that way. But most of the time (since the party didn't have any of orc-blood in it) I played him as this sorta silly geezer, going on one last adventure before his final retirement.

"I can do one better..."

...I've seen several instances of racists trying to MAKE RPGs!

Stormfront attempted to make one in 2010, hilariously making the Aryan race the weakest of the races, while the Jews are downright broken.
http://fstdt.com/QuoteComment.aspx?QID=76276

There's also Racial Holy War, or RaHoWa for short, which was so poorly constructed that it doesn't have any rules for attack resolution and the "superior" white characters can be defeated by body odor and will accept bribes not to attack during combat.
https://rpggeek.com/thread/1624068/white-people-suck-its-rules-man

Last, but not least, there's Myfarog, which is so absurdly complex that it has a chart differentiating between a light breeze and a gentle breeze, and yet didn't bother with an index, and the whole book is done in Papyrus. And yeah, there's racism and sexism, but I can't do it justice here.

As kind of an overdone plot element, it's never seriously showed up as part of the writing; but the nature of tabletops as having a basis in rules caused it to become very interesting indeed in one campaign I was in.

See, when they have disparate stats and the game is less than perfectly balanced (i.e. EVERY game) sometimes one race really was superior. So this one time we ran into a villain that wanted to use a virus to rewrite the DNA of everyone on the planet to be the same race; HIS race; but because you weren't permitted to select that race on character creation because it had the best stats the party was just like 'yeah, go ahead man'.

It quickly devolved into a moderately hilarious bit with the DM trying to convince us to stand up for diversity and altered perspectives and yadda yadda, but the arguments all got shot down with counterarguments of varying validity because the entire dynamic of racism changes drastically when there really IS a master race - quantifiably and objectively...

Which, come to think of it, is probably gonna be the topic of like 300 strips of this comic at some point so pretend I didn't say anything.

That sounds great! =D

I suppose the strongest argument for diversity would be that any invading aliens could tailor diseases to said Master Race and decimate the population at once.

"Bugs"

I ran a Pathfinder game ages ago and one of my player insisted that he be allowed to play a monstrous race, a Thrykreen to be exact. I tend to put a lot of logic and realism in my campaigns (I know, stupid for a fantasy setting) and felt that monstrous creatures would not automatically get a pass in a normal human town. When he decided to enter, no one out right attacked him but it was obvious they were scared of him and he was even barred from buying a horse on the grounds that he would eat it. The player ended up making a fuss over the fact that that was racist and got mad about it even after I explained my reasons for how the npc's saw him and that he was not a common thing

Oddly enough I do have a 40k experience that fits.

Y'see I rolled up an odd character once in a rouge trader campaign, it was a modified and experiemented on Ymgarl genestealer Eldar hybrid that'd had all the warp sensitive biological bits burned out due to t'zeench (handwavium so that it could be played) and so in game my character was always facing what could pretty much be described as "overt racism" from our resident Ex-imperial commisar, granted the same Tau scientist who had made my character had installed suppression doohickeys in all of us to keep it from turning into an actual fight amongst ourselves.

Doesn't matter in the long run when the c'tan shard killed us all though.

Racist gold dragon that wanted to exterminate all humanoids except elves. For added fun, the party then got into an argument about whether gold dragons could be evil.

Turns out the answer is yes, and this one immediately started trying to kill them all.

"Big Guy and Blue Man"

I'm currently in a 5e campaign where the city that everything takes place in is horribly racist against Half-Elves. Their section of the city is horribly run down, and every one that we've met have had injuries from being beaten. Basically, they're slaves.

Thing is, the common people also generally dislike anyone who isn't Human. The Dwarf keeps himself hidden with the Disguise Self spell, but the Goliath and Air Genasi (my character) don't have that luxury. We're often denied service and told to leave until we prove we have the money to spend, and even then we're overcharged. The Goliath has the advantage of being tall and intimidating, while I basically look like a blue Half-Elf thanks to my lithe frame and pointed ears.

Using this in the same campaign I mentioned previously. So there's a player not exactly happy with his current character, so he asked if he could play something else. After he explained it was a Bloodrager(Hybrid Sorcerer/Barbarian), he asked me if I could fit it in somehow.

Cue what was one of the most epic brainstorming sessions I had in a while, creating a new Shoanti spinoff with heavy influences of Far Cry Primal, Native American lore and Golorian templates and culture. Unbeknownst to him, I've also decided to include it later on in the campaign. Sure, its a cliche idea- Native tribe being run out by Big, Bad Greedy corporation(Aspis Consortium), but its pertinent even today and when done right, could be a lot of fun. He jumped at the chance when I mentioned the RP opportunities, so kinda smiling at that.

Also, Mammoth/Dire Wolf caveman riders led by a Conan the Barbarian expy Ranger with a Sabertooth animal companion sounded WAY too much fun. Also gonna throw in a T-Rex because I can, but they got a ways to go first.
