Tell of a time the GM had to tell someone else to chill and quit with the backseat rolling?

Isn't it easier to tell a story about when the GM did not have to tell someone else to stay out of it? =P

Eh, so my attempt at a humorous (but true) point is that at least in my old gaming groups, this was the major foul a player could commit, but also one we all did commit repeatedly. Not because we were trying to break the rules, but because it was just so easy to blurt something without thinking. The rest of the group may have finally been getting beyond that... >.>

My group is usually pretty good about not doing that in RPGs at least. Cooperative board games like Arkham Horror tend to result in the newer players basically just being proxies for the more experienced ones.

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about playing via proxy (officially or unofficially).

I'm including "after the fact" and "joke-y comments" about how you should have played it. In short, combined with actual attempts at telling someone how to play, this leaves about 50% of the gaming experience (actually roleplaying, rollplaying, and the jokes that aren't about how one should have handled a situation XD).

I've been the one who's been told to not backseat game. I still do it sometimes, but in moderation.

I think I have to struggle not to do that to my own players. ._. Yes, I am rightly ashamed. (Although our Paladin does keep forgetting she has spells and might've been better suited to a tanky Fighter.)

"Common Sense [10]"

At the risk of sounding pushy, if there is no equivalent to the "Common Sense" Advantage in GURPS (costs 10 character points), I'd add it to the game. Common Sense has the GM roll a check against the PC's Intelligence anytime the player says the PC is going to do something STUPID. Specifically, something so stupid its out of character.

The awkward thing about role-playing intelligence is that unlike other stats, it isn't just automatically there in the usual course of play. Forgetting you're character is strong, fast, etc. is one thing, but they don't actually become weak, slow, clumsy, whatever because you forgot you weren't. When you forget how intelligent your character is, forget some of the game rules, don't understand some aspect of the game world, and so on, your character becomes stupid even if its Intelligence score says otherwise.

In a system that splits Intelligence and Wisdom, not sure which trait should be rolled against (GURPS lumps the two together). I am also at the point where I believe Common Sense shouldn't be a bonus trait (as written), but just the default game rule; like I said, if my character is smarter than I am, the system should help me do that in the same way I don't have to be able to be as strong/fast/whatever as my character to roleplay it. ;)

Ayup. Quick references are great. Just hope the homage doesn't try to go too far by having Chu literally married to the ocean. XP

"Tell a Story: "I Fart In Your General Direction""

Nerds love a good insult at the gaming table. Sometimes, they love a bad insult as well.

Share a story about a time when a really good, or really bad insult was used at your table, for mocking, banter, or even grabbing aggro. Bonus points if it's your tank that verbally insulted the aggro off another player.

(Note to all story requests. Please make the TITLE of your post the story you want shared, otherwise people just read right past you.)

"Tank out of ammo"

In a custom game I'm playing occasionally with friends, we were engaged against a bunch of mercenaries who had a ton of archers and the upper ground, far enough at first so that we couldn't even shoot at each other. Our warrior had a long way to run to reach the archers so he used all his actions to taunt them. His colorful and imaginative insults made us laugh a lot and kept enemy fire off our squishy sniper thief (mostly)... Except he ran out of insults before running out of targets, or even before reaching them. Fortunately, the DM accepted the taunts anyway. Also fortunately, the warrior had very thick enchanted armor and a Regeneration Ring.

We once waylaid a kings transports repeatedly, stealing a bunch of gold from him. Later in the campaign we heard he had some money trouble and was borrowing and we specifically wanted to insult him, so we sent him a small box of his own money with a politely worded letter that we'd heard he had some money problems and wouldn't he please accept this (small) gift.

My friend was a half-elf Ranger and I was a racist human thief. We killed a bad guy and the NPC gave me a 'cloak of talking to animals' My friend wanted the cloak to talk to her familiar but I said that I wanted it.
Friend: What in the heck do you need it for?
Me: I need it to talk to disgusting animals. (I grab my dice) Like right now. <Put on cloak> Hello Elf? How are today?
Friend: *3 seconds of silence*... I KICK YOU IN THE NUTS!
Me: I ROLL TO um, ROLL DODGE (roll dice from before, lands on a 2) *hold fingers over nose for higher pitched voice* WeLL In reTRospeCt yOu can HaVE iT.

""I bet you cant even make a moon!""

me and my grounp were playing Adnd, and my character got caught in a hold person spell by a necromancer, what he did'nt know was that my elven fighter was a werewolf, but i did not control my transformation yet, so i started to throw insult at him, trying to make him creat a illusion of a moon. It did not work but he did wast all of his prepared magic missils on my to try and shut me up. But in hurting me he made my loose half my HP, triggering my transformation, and a werewolf is a monster, not a person, so i was free.

"How to Insult Your Dragon"

So the warrior decides he's gonna be a smartass and use some stupid 'no dragon can resist this riddle' ploy he probably read in a book or something. Suffice to say, the DM was not ammused, and decided to have the dragon wipe us all out.

So I challenged him to a race :D The DM said he wasn't about to start playing games with the party.

Me "Aren't Dragons like, super rediculously proud about their heritage and junk?"

DM "Yeah.... wh~"

Orkvoice "OY! Y'over grown newt! Jus' wait till everyone hears. Firs' I rip th'teef outta yer kin, then th'next one's to cowardly t'even accept my challenge." *bolt*

DM "..... Okay well he's chasing you now."

Me "Perrrrfect."
