In Shadowrun, back in the ancient days before smartphones, my group was doing a run against a hive of insect spirits. This was the Queen Euphoria module that introduced them, and they had just kitted out with everything they could possibly stagger with, courtesy of the entertainment company that wanted their actress back.

They made ingress to the building that housed the hive, killed off a few bug with overwhelming firepower, and made it into the queen's room. The hermetic mage took one look at the powerful insect queen spirit, and burned EVERYTHING he had into a single Manabolt (Magic pool, fetishes, power focus, elemental sidekick).

One dice cube was not enough.....

I've heard runners talk about the horrors of the insect spirit for decades but don't know enough to understand why everybody fears them so.

Well for starters, they infest the still living bodies of their victims, and the "larva" basically eat the souls of the person being infested.

They never stop growing on their own, the only way to stop a Hive or a Swarm is to destroy every single one of the spirits.

And to 99.9% of the population, they're undetectable without specialized equipment that's hard to get ahold of. On top of that, they're incredibly good at social engineering and being discrete; until the cockup in CHicago only Ares and some Shadowrunners even had a clue about the Universal Brotherhood being a front for the Bugs.
