In another universe, somewhat awkwardly written by a guy who works at a TV station, Johnny would grow up to have a bounty almost as high as Zoro's and dress like an Auron ripoff, while Yosaku would end up with Zabuza's big fuckoff sword and a missing heart.

Is Johnny's backstory a reference to Ban from Seven Deadly Sins?

Awesome Harry Potter reference.
Also, why secretly? They're pretty open with sadism

"I always find it adds resonance to a hero's mission to have some defining element of tragedy in his background."

-The Joker, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

Sounds like the folks are just sticking to the script. It makes sense when you think about it.

Happy, well adjusted, folks rarely decide to go wandering off to uncertain hazardous futures unless there's a powerful need to do so.

Unhappy folks will do it just because they're gambling that the uncertain future will pay out for them.

"I guess I got here earlier than the normals so....Angst"

Most stories have angst in them and most roleplayers have had a time where their character broke down into angst....... or at least it seems likely. Tell a story about such angst in your Rping.

The only story I have to offer is when someone inherited a mech from his now dead friend and felt really bad about the whole thing. It turned out his spirit lived on in the mech and because the spirit mainly helped them the character slowly felt better about the whole thing and started treating the mech with respect and taking good care of it. The mech never got destroyed but I'm sure if it did angst would ensue

I once had a campaign where my friend and I were playing a father and son duo of semi-sane magic users. Only, his character died. My character, naturally, had a mental breakdown that lasted three gaming sessions, led to the death of eight random bystander NPCs, and ended with him preserving his dead father as a puddle of magic goo he kept in a boot. He then carried that "Bootful of Dad" for the rest of the campaign.

I'm beginning to notice a pattern with my characters and boots...

The most angst I've run (as a player) was from an alcoholic Dwarf (so, a Dwarf, really). Tracking down some ne'er-do-wells who were trashing local businesses, we followed the trail to a Tavern. A monster burst the floor and snatched our druid. Chasing to the cellar, we found where it came in: Through the wall where all the ale kegs were stocked.

He immediately dropped to his knees, and with a skyward scream vowed vengeance for all that wasted brew.

I don't do moody broody.

I kinda hate moody broody because they just mope around after bad things happen. Explosive vengeance is normally my go to for things like that

""Too many to count""

I'm guilty of adding a sad tragic element to any backstory I create. Kid accidentally killed his own parents because they were trying to kill him which made him terrified of ever losing control again, another guy who's obsessed with fighting because it was the only way he could ever gain attention from others - even if they were trying to beat the crap out of him. And that guy who only figured out that he lived in an abusive family when he ran into his dad beating his brother up and found out that his brother had been protecting him all this while.

There's also the grumpy spearbearer who's folks constantly shuffled him around in an active effort to remain unattached to him thanks to his grandfather being an abusive dickbag who constantly ruined everything they held dear. This caused him to constantly be seperated from his only friend, who ended up committing suicide thanks to bullying while he was gone, meaning my character had to miss the funeral and only got his diary and clips in memorial (he still wears those clips to this day). Then his mentor died, leaving him his naginata, and that was when my character took a stand for himself and decided to get a scholarship for highschool so that he wouldn't have to move around anymore.

So what if he had to live with a neurotic drunkard aunt who had a crazy yandere ex-boyfriend who wants to kill him because 'kid's standing in the way of my love'?!

Unfortunately, the school my character applied to was ran by the mafia (which was the rp setting) and shenanigans abound. Well, he got good friends out of that, so a silver lining, eh?

So yeah... too many to count...
