People can be real ass holes, especially when they're trying to be funny.
Share a story about a time someone killed or did something else really horrible to you in a game, and then took it back as a joke. Whether it was funny or not.
Our party can quite often be openly vocal about their worries about monsters, so to momentarily screw with their players our various DM's will say "And then X attacks!" before taking it back laughing.
Those surprises are met with "Crap!" if they don't know where it came from, or "Goddammit!" if they *do* know where they came from.
Seriously though, I rarely make killer encounters out of the nasty surprises. When things well outside your weight class show up, that's the time to run, hide, or parley.
Big scary monsters are almost always exclusively sealed behind gold and silver doors with a big red button that opens them. And a hidden switch that opens them and activates a foghorn.
Could be worse, a pathfinder meets shadowrun (totally blaming the spellblight) game I was in had a recording of "foghorn leghorn" saying "Boy, I say boy, you's screwed" when the doors opened up and the cyberdogs with nose linked autocannons started pouring into the room.

Oh, we're supposed to take it back?
