No! Bad Gordon, bad! GM shouldn't fudge the rolls. Or at least shouldn't admit it.

I suppose in this case tell a story about an interesting animal or monster companion you got.

One of my GMs had a problem in his 3.5 campaign where the PCs were all level 5s but he had a bunch of level 25s running aroundkind of dominating the game in a lot of ways. Directly I couldn't compete with them, and the CR he was setting us kind of assumed that the epic level heroes would be helping out. That meant that a lot of our characters were just hanging out in th ebackground. Not too fond of this I came up with a backup character for when mine was inevitably killedby one of the epic level creatures.

This backup character was Archibald the Sky King. A former paladin who abandoned his country into hermitage after he went mad. Using all the tricks I could muster I managed to get his handle animal skill to around 40 as a level 5. With this tremendous handle animal(and comparable ride) Archibald started play with three gargantuan sized eagles all trained to follow his commands. They were known as Shakespeare, Hemmingway and Wilde (I had a whole literary theme going with him).

The campaign was such that there was recently introduced a new, faster way for all people to travel in the way of airships, but the method of creating these flying vehicles was suspect. There was story there, but Archibald didn't care about it, what he cared about was that he was the self titled Sky King. He rode his eagles across the land and any airships that attacked were seen as invaders upon his kingdom. So he planned to methodically destroy every airship and their producers.

Kind of disappointed my first character never died and I never got to pull out this henderson to rebel against the epic level GMPCs.

Hey though, good on you to stick with your original character until death or campaign end. I know all too many who would have just been all "Can I just start this different character, DM?" without bothering to do anything with their old one.

I get really attached to my characters so I didn't want to change it up unless I had to. But I figured a backup was needed after I was attacked as a level 5 by 8 mindflayers. I only survived because I shrank myself down and was hidden from them while they were mindblasting to try and find me.

"What's Kraken guys?!"

Not a power or companion but any means, but we once ended up getting a Kraken as a random encounter while in a river chase. The Wotch and my Rogue Diplomacy'd it by saying that we were scrawny, weak ponies. The humans and elves would be much tastier, we swear!

It called us morons and left us alone.

"True Neutral"

I once made an archery paladin and wanted his mount to be something unique... So I made a Gargantuan Celestial Wolf. I think the DM crapped himself.
