"STORY TIME"

Tell a story where either you or someone else misunderstood what an ability does.

...isn't that like 90% of role-playing? ;)

Just how it is with language; most words have multiple definitions or might mean the same thing but as a trait name, you aren't sure who is the subject, the object, etc.

It only hurt me because I passed on a chance to learn it misunderstanding what it was about, but GURPS has a spell called Body of Water. In the real world, that's means something like a pond or lake or the like. In the game it means changing someone's body from flesh and blood to one of water.

""lightning, like from the sky right?""

my friend learned lightning attack in our last game and didn't get to use it till late campaign, he thought it added actual lightning to his atk but it actually let him get extra hits based on how well he rolled. he was the team damage dealer befor learning what it did.

Hands up everyone who's ever had a player who said, "I'm a fourth-level ranger, so I have fourth-level spells, right?"

Besides that, I had a player who tried to use their aura of evil to demoralize their enemies. Aura of evil, for those who are unaware, basically affects how someone turns up to an alignment-detection spell.

And then I had someone who thought they could just apply quicken spell without affecting the spell level. Guess that's what happens when you try to build a D&D group out of friends who don't play.

Well, I had a couple mistakes, but the last one and most fresh on my memory was with a group of friends as we played the Street Fighter RPG tabletop game... I tried to jump away from an attack, apparently I couldn't... Jumping works works only in the place you are, can't jump away... Got uppercutted the fuck out and ragequitted for the session.

I was playing a Kitsune Myrmidarch Magus, I kept getting my spell like abilities confused with one another as well as ones that were like a feat away. Specifically, misdirection and displacement. The latter of which I couldn't use yet and every session I forgot that again.

It creates illusory duplicates of yourself to confuse opponents so that they attack the fakes instead of yourself.

Not an ability no, but more of a situation; during a stand-alone Werewolf game, as one of our companions was trying to distract an NPC the rest of us circled the NPC's house to see if we could sneak in. Anyway everything was locked up, and so, in character, I said to the distraction guy "Hey, everything's locked up, we can't get in...", then the GM rolled the dice, and the NPC heard me say that and long story short I was possessed by a ghost

So there's a Move called Gravity in the Pokemon Tabletop United game system. The idea of the effect is that it prevents fliers from flying too high, and the pressure makes everything easier to hit. One of my players tried to argue to me that when it was used against a swarm of bird Pokemon, that it should cause all of them to be floored and take falling damage. I pointed out that I'm not going to let him have an Area of Effect Meteor Smash.
