And thus the source of all of our hero's apparent collective inability to die appears.

... it would be insane to let Luffy have an autoinjector.

Doooo eeeeet!

Huh, guess that is one way to do it.

Since I've got so little D&D/Pathfinder experience this "auto-injector" thing is still new to me. I just assumed that the characters had amazing Constitution/Health/Whatever Attribute covers surviving scores, coupled with:

-specific relevant advantages. In GURPS terms Hard to Kill, Extra HP, Damage Resistance, Luck, etc.
-setting specific alternate rules that allow a character to take a pounding even while the scenery is getting trashed.

Usopp actually makes sense as a character in GURPS, what can I say? Great HT score, good DX score, Basic Speed maxed out, several levels of Hard to Kill so that even when he finally gets tagged he just looks dead. Oh and plot armor (represented in gaming terms by a GM that wanted to keep things less-than-lethal most of the time). Just top it all off with Very Rapid Healing so that some down time for the characters between adventures easily brings him back up to full HP...

...yes this is almost entirely irrelevant to this setting. Wait, what Class/subclass allows for brewing potions? Given all the scenes of Usopp working with chemicals couldn't he actually be explained as brewing the team's healing potions until Chopper shows up/constantly having... some to put in the auto-injector...

Did I finally get it? XD

The auto-injector is, as far as I know, an invention of the comic. From the sound of it, it's exactly what it says on the tin: a device that injects healing potions, either when consciously activated or automatically when the character's hit points fall below a certain level.

Constitution governs health in these systems. The higher it is, the more bonus hit points you get per level. The team's survivability is largely thanks to shameless munchkining.

As for who can make potions, that's not a class ability, that's a feat. Anyone with three or more levels in one spellcasting class can take the Brew Potion feat and make potions out of the lower-level spells he can cast... though there doesn't seem to have been much magic as of yet in this campaign.

Well, no. I have encountered autoinjectors long before this comic. If I remember correctly, the easiest way to make one is to abuse the trap rules, namely:
- magical trap can be activated under specific conditions like alignment, class or HP
- spell traps can hold any spell
- traps are cheap and easy to make
You create a repeating spell trap with cure wounds that activates only if you are below half hp and put it inside of your armor. And this kids is why you never waste your cleric slots for healing spells :D

Things like this are why I consider enchanting items to be more like writing a computer program into them than just casting spells. Yeah, you could do that, but you would also want it to continuously cast the healing spell until you are at or above a certain hp.

Programming! It's the key to devising truly high quality magical items.

So... Fast Healing?

Fast healing that works for you, and only you. Anyone else gets healing plus con poison.

Once your hp goes down to a certain level, you get healed, but you get two injections of con poison. You'll have to make your saving throw or lose two points of con per dose. Given what extended combat can do, that's a slow, agonizing death sentence.

So you could make it hand it to a monk or other speedy class with sleight of hands and use magic devices and have them sprint up attach it to the toughest enemy then run circles around it and let it die. Then pick it up and use it again.

Yes. You know the old tactic of kiting a boss? Well, this is an awesome way of doing it.

"Yes they exist"

However they are custom made items, not an d&d item with an official description.

It's an example of the old phrase "Great minds think alike." Or a better analogy is that there is a need in d&d for automatic potion dispensers, and inventive minds have designed ways to fill that slot, that are mostly the same.

Ah, thanks for explaining that Brew Potion is a feat. I wouldn't have expected that but as you can tell, I really don't know D&D/pathfinder. I'm used to systems where something like that would simply be using your Alchemy Skill, along with paying the cost for ingredients, tools and facility as well as of course allotting time to actually make something.

What Usopp does mostly falls under Craft (Alchemy) - basically fantastic chemistry.

Have we actually seen any mage classes?

I'd be inclined to believe that there are no magic based classes, and any such abilities come from DFs?

"Mages"

Actually, a certain someone talking about auto-injectors played a cleric, and Jango also cast spells.

The whole Mage/Magic thing is probably going to continue to pop up in those sorts of places- things like Bucky having a magic cannon, hypnosis spells, stuff like that. Probably a lot of the crazy non-devil-fruit stuff is going to be explained by Magic- like the Thriller Bark stuff and the Skypea things.
