"Tell a Story: About making up a Backstory on the spot"

Sometimes you just need to go with the flow, and make up some random ass shit to justify something. Tell a story about when you or another person just made up something about a character on the spot, for whatever good or bad reason.

And please let us know if you got away with it.

"Backstory"

I might've posted about this adventure before here, but I'd been in a group (literally, it's been the only campaign I've played in a while now) where I was playing the simpleton bard with slight delusions of grandeur.

Now, the backstory actually wasn't for one of our characters exactly, as it was more of a discussion brought up by the GM's odd choice of words. He'd said that a dragon was nesting nearby, which, by certain definitions of the term, means that it was most likely a female dragon, about to lay her eggs.

We as players talked about that in a joking manner up until we entered the dragon's cave, and found the clues we needed to say that, yes, the woodsman we were trying to find had indeed been eaten, but instead of rolling a spot check (to see the arm and the "Lucky Lumber-axe" still in its grip), I immediately have my bard shout "Huzzah! We've found yonder woodsman's quaint hat! Forsooth, he must be just down the near cave path, perchance hiding from the gloomy weather of yesternight!"

And that's where I ran into the dragon's nesting area, cast Charm Beast too well on a decidedly horny dragon, and gained enough xp to level up to 8 and bump my wisdom/"now-a-man" stat up by a fair bit, though my int score stayed relatively low.

I ended up with a singing dragon for a son/familiar/bff/it's complicated, though, so that was cool.

"Backstory, Depressed-Con 1"

One game our GM had rolled out the "back-story generator" and I was the unlucky sap who got given the honor of going first. It was supposed to be about the love of my character's life. Since Lucas Mirage (referencing the things in the desert, this was a Trigun-Cowboy Bebop-Borderlands game, or as we called it Tri-star BebopLands) and i had nada for ideas for my hammer wielding lunatic. I BULLSHAT SO HARD...He ended up being a cop (in a lawless planet) where doing his job basically entailed him giving out widow/er compensation, having like 8 kids and hating his wife (who was a soul sucking bitch with a fiery head of hair). One mission took 3 week to deal with and it was dealing with a crazed cult by the name of The Eye of Shymbala (we never wrote that shit down to get the spelling), he returns to his town to find every individual dead or gone, the town burned down. The greatest love of his life, his kids, GONE. Now on a quest to find out what happened to them and either reunite his family or avenge them all in a fiery death; he set out and got on a bus...which was a bad idea since apparently telling this story caused about 50 people to try and commit suicide with their seat-belts and the like...(he couldn't let them since he was Heroic, and NEVER STOPPED TALKING).

The phrase Depressed-Con became a thing. It was sooo sad to see the GM rolling in laughter...

It got better the next time i was asked to do anything. I made another player NEARLY SHIT HIMSELF, all by going, "Oh, you mean Mommy? She has red hair and likes lasers too. Daddy called her a Soul Sucking Bitch."

"apropos of nothing"

I just like how the length of the line break makes it look like your title was "Tell a Story: About making up a Backstory on the 15th Oct 2014, 2:28 AM," which is, like, a very specific question!

"Wow, amazing story, friend. But it took place at 2:36 AM, so it doesn't really count, sorry..."

Not me, but when another player was thinking about joining the campaign, we sort of did this I guess.

She wanted to be an alien, just as we were landing on their home planet after our first catastrophe. All but one of our party was human; our de-facto leader was the same kind of alien. We had already decided that this alien race was straitlaced in public but also rather kinky, so the "how did she meet" part got answered as "hooked up with our leader at a BDSM party". But then we had to justify *why* she would join the party, and the only answer we could come up with was "our party leader had daughter way back in college but never found out about it until he met her now". Yeah.

She ended up not joining because we already had 6 people in that game, so the above officially didn't happen.

I am actually thinking of doing this in my current campaign- for ease of play what the DM asked for was pretty bare bones, so by fleshing it out a bit I hope to throw some twists at people later on.

on a unrelated note a friend of mine is looking for paid comissions- she is an artist, you can see some of her work here http://apsgod.deviantart.com/
she offered to do character drawings for the group but noone has taken her up on the offer yet.
I already brought it up on http://friendshipisdragons.thecomicseries.com/comics/503
And I hoped to get more interest stirred up here, she is worried about her funds for next year

On retrospect when looking at the scant backstory we generated I did this by accident

In real life the little shop of horrors gave me nightmares as a kid so I had my character have his worst fear be plant monsters, due to a noodle incident in his home town- I havent been able to find may plant monsters when trying to flesh this out, so I may have picked a weakness that is vanishingly rare, unless the dm wants to do the equivalent of giving every crook kryptonite and make up whole new ecosystems of violent plants

I be the game book's atlantis is fishman island, which Sanji would love to visist depending on when he started getting interested in the ladies.

Actually I wonder how Sanji's womanizing will play out, not that it will come up for a while, with nami being the only girl in the crew

"Backstory Time"

Sometimes when one of our members isn't present, we do backstory. Because all this already happened, we can do whatever we want, and we can't die because our characters are already still alive. (We never get far past level three, so saying we were rezzed would have been too much work.)
