It's probably engraved with the stuff. You know, using the rules for 'optional treasures' or whatever in the DM's handbook, the one that has rules for carrying off objects d'art and stuff like that.
Running a low-magic campaign where the players basically had to ransack every room they could instead of doing it 'just because' ended up creating some pretty weird "treasures..!"
I'm sure he'll get to use that racoon excuse in a legit way someday.
also awesome that the GM actually bring up that broomstick flaw, and that Luke just decided to play it.

I think I know what's going on here. Luke did the crashing into stuff thing on purpose to play up Luffy being clumsy. He was staying in character.
