Dangit Cory you're not supposed to say that out loud once you've gotten the note...

Yeah, you're supposed to just chuckle and grin ominously.

The act of passing the note implies that something is up, allowing the other players to speculate based on the skill check. Sometimes, if they roll good, multiple notes can be passed!

I find it's easier to just text my players, because they might not realize me sending a text and them receiving one are related.

"This is what it feels like to know things, huh? Maybe I should build a character for more than just combat."

Normally in our group instead of passing notes GM goes with player in another room and discuss everything. If you think this is slow, we normally play slow regardless.

This is indeed a great way to get combat-oriented players like Cory involved with the story: give them a tactical advantage that isn't about direct combat, but instead some sort of knowledge about the world and the characters that inhabit it. Then they can decide for themselves if they want to share the information or keep it to themselves. Once they start applying their tactical mind to things other than combat, you've got them hooked.

Well, since we know what happens next (or, if for some reason you haven't seen this part in the manga or the show: um, mild-ish spoilers), the likely scenario is that Cory will keep the info to himself and deliberately let the others get incapacitated just to get all the XP for himself. Still, baby steps.

Now the important question. What does Cory need ranks in Profession: Bounty Hunter for? Because that's a far from optimised choice.

My money says an ACF that lets him use those ranks for multiple alternative skills.

It's probably a class Skill, and he already took the alternative(s) that were more impressive.
