Well, he *is* a half fishman... he'd probably live through the ship sinking just fine.

I have a soft spot for the issues of an absent player. Often in one of my groups we just declare they were 'busy slightly off screen', contributing, but not on the tasks we were doing. Or just joke that the player's connection dropped out and they started glitching into a wall.

In the first campaign I was ever part of, our characters accidentally got thrown a hundred or so years into the past. When one of the players told us they were going to be a few hours late to the next session and to start without them, we declared that their character had come down with a case of the "time squats" and so had temporarily confined themselves to the nearest privy.

I once ran in a game where my guy was RPed very "effiminate".
Before knowing how I was going to RP them, the DM had given me the only tent in our starting gear.

The group quickly gained a cart, where most of the group tended to sleep, but if a player was absent and thus unable to state as such, then their character always ended up with me in my tent at night...

For the group I'm currently with, when a player is absent we have a mechanic in game for it. A small pearl, usually blue that we call Schrodinger's Pearl. At least I call it that. If you ain't here, the pearl eats you, and you come out when you are. It works well enough.

Clever on GM's behalf, actually using Zoro's bullshit flaws in a way that legitimately increases the challenge

Sure, but also the player isn't there, so the character can't do much anyway.
