Sometimes you just want to do things because it's fun to make the rubber man bounce around like a pinball.

Everyone likes the chance to lean into their character's unique traits. Well, almost everyone.

Just last night our ranger adamantly refused to use his animal handling to gather up some horses for a rancher that got attacked by orcs. Instead his character went to bed and he left the table. So the war cleric and I(a bard/warlock) with our +1 and +0 respectively had to do something about it. Ultimately, after half a dozen failed attempts, I had to rest and spend all of my slots on sleep spells so that we could get close enough to lasso them and then we had to win strength checks. The cleric at least had a +4 to strength, but she had terrible luck. Through sheer determination, ie we kept rolling and rolling, we did eventually manage to muscle them over to a post. In game it took until after sundown. I would say until well after the cows went home, but we also had to bring the cow home after the horses, so...

... What edition are you playing? Either you're a terrible bard/warlock or you have a terrible cleric. Though I suppose a War Cleric might just hit things with their weapon and not care about having wisdom... except then they only get one use of "War Priest" which seems to be the point if you aren't calling down fire.

(Just to be clear, by "terrible" I mean either a bard/warlock should have CHA or a Cleric should have WIS, so someone is completely lacking in their primary attribute... Not that that can't be fun.)

Well, whatever. At least that pair is probably still better than a ranger that doesn't... range? Wrangle? Are those words connected? Hmm...

5e so Animal Handling is Wisdom based. Yeah she's built to smash not cast. We discussed it at length before finalizing where to put her ability scores. Not what I would consider optimal, but my sister's having fun with it so far and I'm y'know barding it up to provide support. Heroism for damage mitigation, sleep for CC, vicious mockery to debuff, and inspiration to make sure she lands her spell attacks, ie. Guiding Bolt, when she does decide to use them.

Well, the orcs destroyed the pig pen, but we had looted the farm house before we realized the owner was alive, just tied up and gagged in the cellar. He had tried to hide the mithral chainmail he had found, and could not use, so afterwards I liberated the item while he slept and gave it to the cleric. The ranger's player had already walked away from the table and we ended the session there so we'll see how things go from here, eventually, maybe. This is not his first act of explicit lack of teamwork so I may or may not help him get himself killed at the first opportunity. And I do just mean help, he runs off on his own at the drop of a hat after all.

Let him run off then! If he gets killed, it's his own fault for not being a team player
