Too be fair the actual rules don't have any kill steal clause in them. If you meet a red dragon yo, u get the same XP wither you kill it, sneak past it unseen, sell it real estate, or scare it out of the kingdom with Yo Mamma jokes.
Well technically it's split between participants in combat, so depending on interpretation they may not count as participants.
But in the best case scenario, they get almost full xp (with 1 additional participant taking a chunk) for doing nothing at all.
Also by the base rules of 3.5 you don't get xp for anything but killing stuff or whatever the gm decides to award you (which *could* be sneaking past stuff, but it's not explicitly in there)
