How about story time of when the GM strongly hinted you should be looking out for an ambush, but the party only rolled spot when specifically told to?

Never happen.

The Werefrog once had a player would could roll karma on any perception test (including the spot check). Karma is a limited bonus die that the player only has so much. That player nearly ran out of karma on the first leg of the journey checking for ambushes.

Sure, The Werefrog also had him roll spot checks every time he said he was keeping an eye out, just in case there WERE to be something out there. It took him 75% of his karma pool to realize this was going on.

Well, I DM my family, and their newbie's, so they need prompting sometimes to figure out what rolls they can do.

...And sometimes they split the Party.

I happen. Once after defeating a major vilain we decide to backtrack to retrieve the two missing party memebers, and stupidly, we don't pay attention to the fact that we are STILL one the Bad Guy's lair, and just because the Bad guy is defeated does'nt mean it stop being a dangeroud place.
Turn out his henchmens were still loyal to him after his defeat, and thoses of them still in fighting shape tried to avenge him by setting a ambush on us. We managed to win, but it was though doing so right after the boss battle.
After that we started spot-cheking everything like we should

At least they are on the ship. That makes it far harder to split the party.

Never underestimate the PCs. They will find a way.

Plus, they are on a multi roomed ship.

With Zoro's direction flaw, if he walked into another room by himself, that would make him go potentially anywhere.

And if initiative is called before they're all up on deck, that's some 2-3 or more turns under deck merely getting above deck.
