The roll was for Diplomacy to convince the others to go along with his idea.

Not that he has any ranks in said skill but he can still hope for a natural 20 combined with the newbies and roleplayers deciding to ignore the rule about it not affecting PCs

Nah, I say he's pre-rolling to search for traps.

And if he doesn’t find any traps...then he can trap it himself! Yes! The perfect plan!

I am entirely serious by the way. If they find some sort of passage like that getting locked in on both sides by enemies seems a given. So setting something up to catch the inevitable attack from the rear seems like a solid plan to me. Mind you I will admit I may just enjoy excessive collateral damage.

Then, let me tell you my favorite way to do stuff like that.

Glyph of Warding. It's ability to be on any object deadly with a bit of prep makes it perfect.

Say, rocks on the ground, or a ranger's Arrow tips.

Except that's explicitely not how that works. To quote the spell: " If you choose an object, that object must remain in its place, if the object is moved more than 10 feet from where you cast this spell, the glyph is broken and the spell ends without being triggered." If you meant the 3.5 version, while it does not EXPLICITELY forbid it, it's counter to pretty much every description of the spell's use in the writeup.
