"Tell a Story: When you knew you were boned, but needed specifics"

Sometimes you just get that feeling. That creeping numbness up your spine. That chill at the base of your neck. And you know you're boned. But you don't know exactly HOW.

Share a story about when you or someone else at the table just KNEW that everything had gone south... but needed a few particulars to get the full picture of how screwed you really were.

First couple of times my Pathfinder group had to fight a dragon in Hell's Rebels. And when I say that, I mean that it was the same damn dragon. The first time, it was after we'd gone through another big fight, so we were low on resources when it swooped down on us. Didn't take long to figure out we needed to GET OUT OF THERE, but the second time, we were refreshed and thought we were on more even footing.

That... was a mistake.

See, this particular dragon had a few advantages on top of being a giant winged murderlizard. She was empowered by infernal magic, so she had regeneration, breathed literal hellfire, and was also casting spells like Mirror Image. That last one was the worst, combined with the way our dice had apparently gone on strike that night, so none of us so much as landed a hit while we were getting beaten on. After a few rounds of that, we realized we had no choice but to run away again.

We did manage to beat her the third time, but after those previous encounters we were pretty gun-shy and ended up pumping most of our war chest into better equipment and buying up potions and scrolls so we could apply just about every buff conceivable.

Basically every time my ninja’s sneak attack doesn’t go through. Just have to go through the list of possibilities. See Invisibility/ Trueseeing? No I have Obscuring Mist up. Tremorsense? Well I’m flying so probably not. Blindsight? I mean I’m not sure how it would get it but if so I guess I’m screwed. Wait, it has Ooze traits? That explains it.

Also our Oracle ever time someone casts Disintegrate. The fact that he got a Rod of Absorbsion just to stop them amuses me.

Do you have blindsight yourself? Otherwise you shouldn't be able to sneak attack if you use obscuring mist...

Fun little item called a Goz Mask. For 8000gp you can see through “fog, smoke, and other obscuring vapors” without penalty. Also some other stuff like being harder to blow away and can breathe water for a limited time. Great for negating wizards, because while most folks will prepare Trueseeing, nobody bothers planning for mist

Well that's a more reasonable price than the 200 gp or whatever things in that one adventure path that let you see through fog. Probably a bit cheap still considering it doesn't have a limit on that distance and ways to see through fog are pretty exclusive.

That brings up a good point that for logia's, transforming into their incorporeal form is not automatic, something that is rarely covered in One Piece (closest is the incident with Ace and Smoker in Alabasta) which is why Enel's feat of performing it while sleeping is actually very impressive.

Enel can be explained by him having his Mantra/Haki, if I remember correctly.

Actually, for the most part the logia form *does* seem to be automatic in the manga/anime. Unless they're hit with an elemental weakness or haki.

It's why the revelation that Dogtooth *didn't* have a Logia fruit power was such a big deal.

Generally speaking it is made a point that automatic transformation is something Logia users train to have just like Dogtooth. It's just we tend to be seeing Logia users who have trained for the reflexive transformation.

Mechanically speaking it just needs to be able to be bypassed when they're denied their Dex bonus. Enel has uncanny Dodge. Probably from his Divine Oracle levels.
