This one went over my head.

It feels like it's a jab at game companies (like alderac/5 rings) that run storyline tournaments, and Luke broke the meta.

To give Alderac credit, someone TRIED to break the meta, and they just rolled with it. One L5R tournament was "To see who would marry Bayushi Kachako, daughter of the Crab Daimyo", with a storyline that it was a huge fighting tournament, and the winner won her hand... and the guy who won the tournament was playing a deck built around this wimpy, foppish little courtier.

They sat there, and thought, and came up with a way to fit the story... Right as the last two contenders knocked each other out, simultaneously, this guy entered the stadium floor. "Am I late?" he asks. Technically, he is now the last man standing. Bayushi Kachako, who could cosplay as She-Hulk with a little bodypaint, laughs uproriously, and says, "What a fine little wife he will make!"

Are you sure about this?
Bayushi is a Scorpion family name. And that one bears a striking resemblance to "Bayushi Kachiko", the most influencial clan leader ever, and "The sexiest woman of Rokugan".
The family leading the Crab were the Hida, iirc.

They're mixing up the names (and the ending, a bit), but the story is real, it's in the first edition "Way of the Crab" sourcebook. The Crab Champion's daughter was Hida O-Ushi, and her "little wife" was a Shinjo, a samurai from the Unicorn Clan; Shinjo Yasamura, maybe?

Oooh, right.
Shinjo Yasamura. I remember him. He was in one of the preconstructed decks (back in the day).

After looking the story up, I like this version much better (well, except for the appropriation of <3kachiko<3 :P )

Yeah, Alderac sometimes was good with that, but there's a reason why they basically pulled a Crisis on Infinite Earths-style megaevent every few years just to basically reset things.

It's like if the game company was holding a jousting tournament to promote their new lance combat, and Luke decided he just wanted to forgo the lance and simply punch his competition as they went by.

I've never head of Megalo Boxing. But think it's a fun coincidence that that's the name of a shark in later canon. If we ever get that far.

That might be because there was an actual (giant) shark species named "Carcharocles Megalodon"

Yeah, they're awesome. Stood in one of their jaws. Can't wait for one of them to resurface from the marianas trench.

I think the idea is that everyone else had a character that involved the new book in some way (a class, race, feat, etc. in D&D terms), but Luke didn't have the book, so he did his Luke thing.

Or just prove how cool the new books are by having the guys who have it be the ones who win.

Lucian Roberts huh...
Gonna go out on a limb and say he'll either be Rob Lucci or Rob Lucci will be based on him.

As a side note, all the Weers Publishing stuff is what eventually made me drop the Crystal DMs and Aangvanced, so this comic is putting me a little on guard.

On the plus side, the One Piece campaign doesn't seem to be homebrew in-universe, so we likely won't be seeing the "play to keep the rights to your game" story arc at least.

I don't minde crossover as long as it does'nt make it neccessary to read the others comics to understands, so i just hope it does'nt.
Nothing against the others campaign comics, of course, but to properly enjoy a parody of something, it's better to be familiar with it.
Actually i even ended reading this because i was out for One Piece (of which i'm a big fan) related content.
Which mean i haven't read steven and the crystal GMs, for exemple, since i don't watch the show. Only this one, and Darth & Droid that i recently started. i'll probably give a try to the Naruto one, too.

Also, let's be fair, the other campaign comics just... ...aren't that good. So far, the only ones I'd recommend are this one, "Friendship is Dragons", "Darths & Droids" and, of course, the original, "DM of the Rings".

I hate to say it, but I’d have to agree. Although I’d add the Code Lyoko comic as a good one too, although it doesn’t seem as populated, and the author has had scheduling issues in the past.
Which isn’t to say that the other ones are bad. They’re just... unfun? DndAangvanced was ok and I agreed with some of the stuff they did, but other parts are just completely out of line or seemed shoehorned in. Although I’m biased on that because I had been working on my own 5e screencap ideas for TLA, not avidly but.... it just felt like it wasn’t quite what avatar had set up. I don’t watch steven universe, and it seems like it’s really cool for a screencap comic considering I’m thouroughly uninterested in the show, but I just got uninvested in the comic too after a while.

"Shoehorned in"? I think you mean "terrible filler content". And my favorites are The Bloody Nipple Saga (Conan) and Darths and Droids (Star Wars). Really though, so long as they're not just a comic telling the exact same story with numbers on the side, they're at least interesting to me.

So, not that anyone will really care but... I don't think Joe's the protagonist of Megalo Box. Or maybe he is, but he isn't the "main character". I'm in a hurry, so I don't have time to double check the terminology.

If I had to pick a "main character" for Megalo Box, it'd be Gansaku Nanbu. He's even more at the heart of the story than anyone else. He's just not the "face" of the series.
