Eh, depending on who you are, you're not missing much by drinking.

Then again, that's conjecture on my part. I think the only time I've consumed alcohol was when I had to go to a Lutheran Church for my nephew's baptism or christening or dedication or whatever it is they do in that tradition. I got into the wrong communion line. XP

Now, for those who think I'm being preachy, eh, maybe I am. I know too many people who just were not ready to drink by the time they hit 19. Or 20. Or 21. Maybe by age 25? Me? I'm a natural glutton who - at that time - could down liter after liter of beverage. Figured alcohol would be no different unless I had an adverse reaction to it quickly (so that I just couldn't drink that much).

I'm socially awkward, so some folks think I should drink to relax. What they seem to miss is that I'm awkward but once I naturally relax, I'm already loud, even boisterous. I figure my drinking would progress something like this:

1st Drink: I'm fine.
2nd Drink: I'm fiine.
3rd Drink: Ah'm fiiine!
5th Drink: AH'M PURDY!
10th Drink: I'm not sure, but the next day I'm waking up, covered in mud with a shovel next to me. Or no mud but still a shovel and a large burlap bag making noises...

I think I'd need a Raxon at that point. >.>

Some people don't have the self-control to drink responsibly. And it doesn't matter what age they are, they will never be 'ready' to drink because they will become alcoholics. Other people are fine for years and years, but sadly they end up going through some mental trauma and that sends them into a downward spiral and they drink even though they shouldn't because they're in a bad head space and thus they become alcoholics.
And then there are people who do have the self-control to drink responsibly and there's nothing wrong with that.
Me personally, my parents never had a problem with me drinking even when I was a kid. I never cared for the flavor of alcohol though so I almost never partook even though the entire rest of the family did during the holidays at my grandparents' houses. Now, I still don't really care for the taste of alcohol so when I drink, I prefer mixed/sweeter drinks and only drink socially and never so much so that I can't drive myself home after things breakup. Some level of intoxication does make it easier for me to participate in group conversations since I tend to take a while to decide on how to phrase things and if I really want to say anything and far more often than not, conversation has moved along far beyond where I am in my forming of words.

Don't look at me. I don't drink alcohol or do drugs. My head is plenty deranged as it is, thank you very much.

Well, I did once play a stoner druid. The entire plot of a session was the party figuring out what the hell they did last night. Apparently, my druid cooked for everyone, and I made them all mushroom salad.

Magic mushrooms, by the way. My druid smoked something like five pounds of pot a day and ate the mushrooms at every meal. Frogs were hollowed into condoms, villagers were molested, deer penises were ground into sausages, and they threw wild goats into peoples' homes.

Once they found out, they decided to never return to that village. Also my druid was never allowed to cook for anyone ever again.

Oh, Raxon, the issue isn't that I help with doing those things - since I don't do them - but that if I did

...it is with disposing of the witnesses and evidence afterward. >.>

On a slightly less silly note, I really am weird enough as is. Like I said, I've had friends or coworkers tell me they wanted to see what I'd be like drunk or high. I asked one of them to really think about it, about how I normally behave and how they think that would really affect me.

The person went from jovially kidding around to quietly sober and basically said: "Yeah, maybe I don't want to see that." I'm not too good at keeping my cool. Once I get used to you, you can't shut me up. My brain seems to find strange connections between things, that can usually be explained to others, but that's just it... they have to be explained. S'ike "Oh, that why you brought that up!"

I've been given the advice to use alcohol to relax too, but I feel like if I were to need alcohol to be social, it would make it real easy for me to become an alcoholic. Mental addiction is a thing, after all.

i don't drink much because i don't particularly see a point in it and don't like the taste overall. Only a little drink if there's a celebration and we're having a toast or the like. and i had never drank enough for it to affect my behavior.
Now i do played one or two characters that enjoyed it, since i often try to diferenciate my characters from myself.

Yeah I consume beverages/food quickly... and I don't think it would be very different with alcohol. Drinking would probably lead to getting *very drunk* and a lack of filter and it's *very important* I filter what I say. Any time I don't think about what I say it's... not great.

Yeah. I don't care too much for alcohol. I usually stick to root beer or chocolate milk if I'm drinking something besides water.

I just really don't care all that much for the taste of it myself. Though I do like a good cider. Cider is about the only alcohol I'll actually go for. Not saying I won't try a glass of wine or something now and then if offered, but I just don't care that much about it. And I just don't like beer.

I've always wondered what kind of drunk I am(personality), but have never had enough alcohol in one go to even get tipsy, so... the world may never know.

If you haven't had a drinking session, you're missing out on a really fun session. It becomes half improvised, half competitive game, and leads to better adlibs than before.

Raxon, I just assumed that was a regular session for you because that was simply a "good" session for my old group (don't have one at the moment).

Given how we'd get when we were low on sleep, I'm betting we might get one or two funnier than normal bits (which we may or may not remember), some stuff that seemed better at the time but only because we weren't sober, and a major spike in misunderstandings and arguments. XP

I didn't actually have my first drink until I was 22 or 23. I still don't drink that often, mostly because soda's cheaper and comes with free refills.

The drinking age is 18 in the UK. The social reaction to being "too young to drink" is the same all over the world, no matter what the drinking age is. All those under the limit would drink irresponsibly, and the moment the majority of the youth hit that limit they indeed do drink responsibly for a few years until the novelty wares off. The stereotype about 19 year old drinkers in the UK are just as bad the one about 22 year old drinkers in the US.

I used to party extremely hard, back in the day. I only stayed away from the really dangerous stuff, but if you could drink, smoke, pop or sniff it, I did it. Even back then, though, I did it responsibly.
Nowadays, after understanding why and how "legal recreational drugs", are used to abuse the populace, I wish the sale of all recreational drugs was only available on presciption.
I quit smoking, and I only support "luxury alcohol", ie.: Self-brewed or extremely pricey, since this stuff wasn't made to pacify the populace and can't actually be abused like that.
Well, it still can, but if it took you half an hour to make that glass of beer/cocktail/etc. or you payed five bucks for that glass of whiskey, you won't be binging it.

I'm in the same boat of medication preventing me from having alcohol. I don't really mind, since even when I was able to drink I never was crazy for the stuff. Heck, for the longest time I didn't even like beer because every time I'd try some it would invariably, as I like to describe it, taste the way urine smells. My go to drinks then were wine, rum (sometimes mixed sometimes straight), and vodka (my recommendation for vodka that's not too expensive but still has good quality is Sobieski, while there are better brands they tend to be a little too hard on the wallet).

I'm Catholic and alcohol has just been a normal part of life to me. Dad would let us kids try a sip of his beer when we were young, which of course would make us all sputter and go 'gross!'. There was an alcohol cabinet at home and alcohol at all the family gatherings, but I can't remember anyone ever getting smashed and if one relative drank their spouse played designated driver. My parents let me a have drink at 18 so long as I was staying home that night. I can't claim I've always drank responsibly, I had a couple interesting evenings at college, but generally alcohol is just a normal part of life for me, like soda or tea.

"Responsibly drinking 22 year old."

I only really drink alcohol so i can get all of those urges out and even then the only time i have actually gotten drunk was when my friends and I went to a semi local hotel and casino for the 21st birthday of the last one to become of age. Strangely however I still haven't had a hangover which I kind of really want to do so I have a good mental reason to not drink.

Got sick at x-mas... ooh its gotta be 5 or 6 years ago now.. when they had all they had to drink was 12 diff flavored vodkas and a crappy punch with 'cranlemon orange'
tried taste testing the diff flavors.. straight to sick as a dog.

I have made it a habit to always get drunk before running a mindfuck session. Turns out to work pretty well. Only done it twice so far. Once when they hallucinated while traveling through a desert and hitchhiked off a frog alien by offering him a giant chicken (funnily enough both the chicken and the frog were not hallucinations). The other time was a filler session due to some players being unavailable, so I had them accidentally inhale a probably lethal amount of LSD with traces of psychoactive drugs and had them enjoy things getting progressively weird as they made their way through a depowered section of their ship. Good times

I've tried various forms of alcohol since turning 21, from beer to wine to mixed-drinks, and every time I've just found the taste to be so repugnant that I've never beem able to force myself to drink enough to get drunk.

I've honestly given up trying at this point, and my friends are good enough to respect that.

For some reason I tend to roll a statistically improbable number of 20s when I've been drinking, so I usually only drink while gaming if I think some serious shit's going to go down that night.

You buff your character however you like, I know what works for me.
