"Tell a Story: The Friendly Ghost"

Not all ghosts are trying to bleed the life out of our party members. Just the ones that give EXP! The named ones are usually super nasty, or super nice. When was yours the latter?

Share a story about when you encountered a spectral friend, and about how they helped you out.

i suddenly realise all the ghost i met where jerks. though there was apparently a time where a friend played a ghost or something like this but i did'nt get to see it in action because he was'nt here the two only sessions i played in that campaign.

I don't know if any of the ghost encounters I can remember really count. They've often acted nice towards (or at least tolerated) our party, since our quest to stop the necromancer or solve the murder or find someone's remains to be given a proper burial has so often been directly tied to the ghost's desire to move on, so they've usually been quite helpful. Doesn't mean they were really that friendly to people who didn't directly aid them, though. Usually they were sort of jerks.

One innocent, confused ghost child may have been the closest we got to a genuinely friendly ghost, and that's mostly because she didn't know she had been dead for over a decade. She thought we were new farmhands at the abandoned farm she was haunting, and, being a rather helpful little spirit, she showed us around. Of course, she still saw the farm like it had been while she was alive, while we saw what nearly eleven years of no maintenance does to a place.

Thing was, she didn't want to move on since she was convinced she was still alive and well. She didn't stay friendly for very long once our priest started blessing the farm, so maybe this story doesn't really count either.

In one campaign that's been ongoing recently. We've had an experience with a ghost. It showed up one night after we woke up in a ghost town completely abandoned, that was much much livelier the night before with a marriage festival. Oh, and my character woke up in some old-timey nightgown.

So we get back on the road, hit the next town... who is having the same festival as the ghost town we stayed at. Luckily this town actually was real. We stay the night, get going. A ghost pops up in the wagon to spook the part. It's not obviously hostile, it just shows up to scare and chill and annoy the party for a while. After a few days and a couple small events we really don't see it anymore.

Now, one of the characters(The group's Arcanist) really annoyed my character over the course of their journey. So my character takes this as a great opportunity. I negotiate with an Innkeeper when we're staying in a city for a couple days to get a copy of the key to the other guy's room. I get a couple buckets of blood for cheap from a butcher in town, and I wait for the other guy's character to go to sleep before using my stealth skills and his horrid perception to go in, rearrange his room, draw out a blood magic sacrificial circle(I did have a few ranks in Arcana as a Magus, although when they got it examined, it apparently had it's faults and would have worked in reverse if it had been done seriously) around his bed, change him into that old-timey night gown that we got from the ghost town, tied him to the bed, then left and relocked the door and went to sleep.

Purely speculation, but the ghost did show up again I think. Since in the morning after his character woke up and started screaming bloody murder, also known as "HELP!!!!!!!" and the third player's character breaks into the room to release him from the bed as the blood magic circle starts to glow ominously(The part I think the ghost did), and they get out before it flashes brightly.

Now they're super freaked out thinking someone just tried to kill the Arcanist. They go off to find the rest of the party and tell them about what just happened. Meanwhile my character who was waiting sneaks into the room, locks it from the inside, cleans everything up, and jumps out the window when they jiggle the doorknob and find it locked as I'm finishing up. So they unlock it to find the room perfectly normal, and naturally blame the ghost. The Arcanist then decides to rip up and burn the gown.

And hopefully he doesn't read this comic, because he still doesn't know I was the one that did all that.

"I've Seen A Great Many Things"

My encounter with a friendly ghost in a Pathfinder campaign was heavily inspired by the Darrowshire questline in World of Warcraft.

We met a young ghost girl who took us inside her house to hide us from the nearby undead, learned that she had starved to death when we killed her zombified body, and sewed her lost doll back together after recovering it for her.

Eventually, we ended up in combat with her father, who had long since been killed and transformed into a Death Knight. After a few failed attempts at talking to him, we reintroduced him to his now ghostly daughter, and his realization of what had happened finally broke the curse.
