People aren't allies with Balmung. They tolerate Balmung to get to Kite of the Azure Flame.

i had a character who suscitate this in others players. everytime something related to his backstory came up, most of the time something they should know, they would just turn to me with a look that said "what's that event the NPC is reffering to?'' ''Who's that?'' or ''what was the point of killing a 95 years old retired thief if he was going to die from his own old age anyway ?!!"

They might have a point about that last one...

Me and a friend decided to make a han/chewie con-artist pair of characters, and i was playing chewie. since i didn't have enough levels to play a bear, i decided to improvise.

My character was a human raised by bears, except he thought they were elves, so he claimed to be raised by elves, but acted like a bear. for some reason no-one could keep this straight, despite me just calling him the bear. this let him with bear-like habits and a hatred for the strange 'naked elves' that the dwarves and orcs bonded with him over, while the elves freaked out over hearing them discussing elf cookery.

he was a ranger with a bow and the long-term plan was to turn him into a bear, or get him bears familiars and get thm ranger levels so THEY could have bear familiars etc.

despite understanding common, he only spoke in growls (which i acted out) and glares unless i was messing with someone, in which case he spoke clean articulate English (drove the sorcerer nuts, i also invested points in obscure languages just to make it worse, and they kept coming into play). whenever possible he would hunt for honey or go fishing with his bare bear hands. the party's first encounter was, naturally, bears, and he tried to talk to them, but they weren't allied with his family, and law of nature meant he had no trouble killing them.

the funny thing? his partner died almost immediately, but the bear was the longest-surviving character for the campaign.

Forgetting who you are related to is understandable if you have a big family but usually you can at least remember your parents names, if not their birthdays.

And we once again see the inherent flaw with a player playing a character that SOMEONE ELSE has created.

I once escaped this situation by renaming the pre-made character and rewriting his backstory to my liking.

Probably explains why Usopp’s backstory hardly ever comes up; he’s certainly a character that develops in through getting over the present, not the past.
