History and lore are necessary in almost any kind of tabletop game. Entire settings are revolved about what has happened in the past related to those areas and the people that may have lived there. Although when it comes to most players, it's ripe for roleplay.
Tell a story of a time where a character or several characters visited a area that was very important to the past for them, where they either witnessed or were part of a big historical event
I ran a mini campaign in my campaign where the players had found the chronicles of a long gone major hero and his group. Rather than tell the story, I had the party roll high level guys and we played out the chronicles over a month or so. Other than having to not kill a guy when I clearly should have axed, it went over pretty well
In my star wars game, I had my characters sneak in as extras on a movie set that was making a film about their recent exploits. The director was a seer; his movie scripts were always accurate about details he could never have witnessed. This let them replay an earlier fight from the big bad's perspective and figure out that he had faked his death.
