Is this one of the first instances in the show of humans in One Piece being just... absurdly tall? I can't really think of any notable examples beforehand, especially if you discount the Fishmen since they're not human.
I dunno if this comic will ever look into it, but there's a canon reason for it. It's a pretty incidental remark WAAAAAAAY later, but it's acknowledged.
I mean, Giants are a proper race in the setting, and I think Whitebeard was half-giant (accounting for his incredible size). wouldn't be too surprising to find out that there's Giant blood just floating around the gene pool.
It's actually never stated whether Whitebeard was half-giant - as far as I can remember, the only *canon* half-giant in the series was Big Pan the wotan, i.e. half-giant half-fishman. Whitebeard was just A Big Dude.
Absurdly tall people in One Piece has been a thing since chapter two with Morgan, but it has gotten a bit absurd over the years, possibly as Oda had to make his new tall characters even taller than the last ones. The half-giant theory, while popular, has never been confirmed by Oda and doesn't actually stack up when you look at the series in detail: Big Mom was shown to have normal sized human parents even though she already towered over them aged 6 and Donflamingo is confirmed to have possibly the most genetically pure human blood line possible (for spoiler reasons) and still stands a full 10 feet tall, just to name two recent examples. Also, while Ceasar Clown was indeed involved in gigantification experiments, this was new research (probably no more than 5, and definitely less ten years old) and so doesn't explain why older characters are so huge. So unless Oda expands on the subject in future and adds an explanation, this leads us to the conclusion that in the fantasy land of One Piece there are just some really big dudes.
yeah. i'd say growth just work in a really weird way in OP. he even said in a SBS that Oars absurd size compared to others giant was just the equivalent of the guy "who tower over everyone in his class" (or something like this), while that thing is way bigger than a normal giant.
Hey, that guy have to come from somewhere. and since none of the giant seen for the moment where looking like Onigiri, there might be some place where you find a dozen of enormous onigiri faced giants.
i don't know if the moment when giantification experiment had started have been stated, we know they stopped them a few years ago (probably because they thought that if even the SuperGenius Vegapunk could'nt do it, then no one oculd). we know that the government had been interested in giant soldier since the time they recruited the first giant Marine, John Giant, and it was 50 years ago.
I still don't think this would be the reason, as it is very unlikely that all the persons with absurd size had been part, or related to someone who have been part of theses experiments.
It was also noted that the only person who ever actually got results out of
the gigantification research was Ceasar Clown because he experimented on still growing children, and even he still considered it a failure at that point as they all his subjects died from his drugs after five years.
...how the fan theory that this guy will be the next straw hat got actually popular I have no idea
*Sigh*

Refresh my memory. Does it have anything to do with what Cesar was doing on Punk Hazard?

Krieg was pretty tall, maybe not to absurd level, though.
And i think Morgan was 2 times Luffy's size.

If anything, people in the One Piece world should just hope that there is'nt a whole tribe of people like SanJuan Wolf.
