I've actually got a... do you still call it a homebrew when it's an entirely new game system?... that has a class who's schtick is this. They basically get their level in followers- either a bunch of mooks, or one or two same-ish level partners sort of thing.

If it is a homebrew game system, then yes, that is the appropriate term. ;)

I've only played a handful of games, with this being something any character could take so long as the player spent the build points on it and the GM signed off on it, so color me surprised that there is not this in D&D already. XP

"Typical Quest"

What's that? You want me to go and kill the dragon that is burning your village every few months, and if I do that, you'll reward me with that tough armor at the back of your shop? Alright, I'll have that done immediately.

*yells out the door* SANCHEZ! Go gather the troops and bring them to the big cave to the North of the town, you're going to go kill a dragon today! There's a promotion in it for whoever lands the final blow!

Well, that should be done within a day or so. If you need me, I'll be at the inn sampling the local vintages.

You do this thing with Leadership and no one bats an eye. But if I even mention Locate City I'm no longer allowed to play.

"Uhhh..."

The locate city bomb doesn't work by RAW, because the area is a circle. It's practically the only spell in the game that uses that kind of area, too.

It's really stupid, who missed that in editing?

Heh, I actually have Squire (which will evolve into Leadership like a Pokemon) for my character in the Hell's Rebels campaign. Since we've already got a full four-person group, my DM didn't want to have to deal with effectively adding another character to the party on top of all the campaign-specific bonuses it offers.

Instead, we ended up settling on a nerfing where instead of a full cohort, we get the option to bring a "guest" party member along out of an assortment of NPCs. These guest party members can use their skills and spells out of combat to help us along, and in combat they aren't really considered present, but they have abilities selected for them that can be called upon by the party as uses-per-day abilities.
